Make sure you save the dates for the 2nd MenEngage Global Symposium to be held during 10-13th November 2014, in Habitat World, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, India.

MenEngage, a global alliance of organisations working with men and boys for gender equality successfully organised the ‘Global Symposium on Engaging Men and Boys in Gender Equality’ in Rio de Janeiro in 2009, the details of which are on www.menengage.org. The event brought together around 500 activists, researchers, and practitioners from 77 countries to share their experiences in challenging rigid gender norms and engaging men and boys in reducing violence against women and girls; promoting sexual and reproductive health; HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment; and fatherhood and care-giving.

Now, MenEngage and Centre for Health and Social Justice are organising the 2nd MenEngage Global Symposium 2014 – Men and Boys for Gender Justice in New Delhi in November 2014. This Symposium will bring together researchers and practitioners, advocates and activists, government representatives and the donor community to share experiences, evidence and insights and seek directions on how men and boys can creatively contribute to gender equality, the new development paradigm beyond the MDG framework, and towards the broader vision of social justice.

The primary objectives of the symposium are to provide structured opportunities to academics, researchers, practitioners, activists of interrelated disciplines to:

1. Consolidate and collate diverse research, resources and practice related to work on men and masculinities in different domains related to gender and social justice

2. Create an appropriate and safe space for discussion and dialogue on complex issues related to working with men for furthering work on human rights/ social justice including partnerships with women’s rights movements. Develop and strengthen partnerships with existing initiatives on gender and social justice based on a shared understanding.

3. Exchange and synthesise knowledge across disciplines to enhance the capacity of attendees to work more effectively on gender and social justice related issues

4. Develop a set of positions on the need for engaging with men and boys in the post 2015 sustainable development scenario

5. Identify new strategies and approaches to strengthen work on gender and social justice and secure commitments to action from attendees on these.
The symposium will include discussions on men and masculinities when addressing issues of overall development, gender inequality and social inequities.

The symposium has the following seven tracks:

1. Violence – including gender based violence and discrimination across the life cycle, harmful practices sexual violence, violence against children, violence among men, suicide

2. Health and Wellbeing – including sexual and reproductive health and rights, HIV and AIDS, MNCH, non communicable disease, mental health, health systems, health equity and health seeking behaviours of men.

3. Poverty and Work – including care work, livelihood, unemployment, migration, globalization, trade union and movements

4. Sexualities, Identities – moving beyond the gender binary, privileges, vulnerabilities, subordination, hegemonies, LGBTI, homo/trans phobia, disabilities, alternate/non-conformist men

5. Care, Relationships and Emotions –changes in roles and relationships, at home and in the world, roles in and response to social, economic and environmental transformations

6. Peace building, social justice, inclusion – including militarisation structural violence, peace-keeping and post conflict situations, fundamentalisms, social movements, justice.

7. Making of Men – from masculinity to humanity – including socialisation, growing up, influence of education, sports, culture, tradition religion, ethnicity, media; in harmful masculinities and violence, developing respect for diversity
